For this exhibition at Yamamoto Gendai, Murayama
reveals her new series that she has been working on since 2002 titled 'Clumps of Beauty'.
These works are instigated from a desire to make, in her own words,
"work that fills in the gaps," and are manifested, judging
by their slight variations in size, on seemingly found pieces of
cork approximately 40cmX30cm in size. But the cork's presence is
almost silent as it is engulfed by the cornucopia of fantastical
objects that are arranged in a very dense and obsessive manner.
Some of these objects construct a semblance of a landscape and others
suggest inhabitants. Together these objects create a sense of a
world, not so much of a microcosm but more of a small shard of a
world that has chipped off and floated toward us. Or as the title
of this show 'Scenery to the Next World' suggestes, these floating
worlds are vehicles to transport us. The physical density in her
work evokes not so much myopia but an overwhelming voluptuous energy.
The obsessive element in her work inevitably brings up the heavy
feeling of the possibility of a futile act, which is inevitable
in any line of flight. Teetering on the brink of futility and ethereal
transience is what could make her work so compelling. |
